Formerly named as Hadrianoupolis after the Roman Emperor, it was the capital for Ottoman Empire and was called EDİRNE from 14th century until the conquest of Constantinople when the dynasty moved to İstanbul. Even then the city functioned as semi-capital of the Ottoman Empire. Heir apparent Sultans were sent to Edirne for their royal education. Sultan Mehmet The Conqueror was born and was educated here. It was the 4th most populated city in Europe during the 18th century. The city has hosted various civilizations of different religions and languages throughout the history. Imperial past and cultural wealth exhibiting numerous Ottoman relics makes Edirne very popular and interesting. It is famed as the city of culture, education and tourism today, and attracts tourists from all over the world. Some traditional tastes special for Edirne carries the city to a foremost place in Turkish Cuisine. Edirne has borders to Bulgaria and Greece and connects Asia to Europe via Balkans.
